Terms & Conditions

General Conditions

The following terms & conditions apply to all work done on behalf of you—the Client—by Daniel Hoagland and Reforge Writing & Editing Services:

  • I will provide coaching/editing/writing services in the manner agreed upon in writing by both myself and the Client.

  • The Client is under no obligation to offer me work.

  • I am under no obligation to accept work offered by the Client.

  • The work will be carried out in a time and place as determined by me, using my own equipment.

  • The work will be carried out by me. I will not subcontract work to third parties, unless agreed upon in advance with written approval from the Client.

  • I confirm that I am self-employed, and am responsible for my own income tax obligations. Any taxes being applied to the Client will be clearly marked as such on invoices.

  • My service contracts and agreements stipulate that the Client has read and understood these terms of service.

Governing Law

All work done by Reforge Writing & Editing Services shall be governed by the laws of the District of Columbia and the United States, regardless of the country of origin or nationality of the client, or the country in which the work is completed.

Copyright & Ownership

  • Unless a co-writing/co-authorship arrangement is made separately in writing, all royalties and monies gained by eventual sale of the Client’s work will be the sole property of the Client.

  • All content delivered to me by the Client remains the sole property of the Client.

  • Following payment of my invoice, any content created by me as part of my work will become the sole property of the Client unless other written agreements are made.

Quotation & Fees

A quotation for services will be provided based on the type of service indicated by the Client and the approximate page count of the manuscript.

A quotation is not a guaranteed price. Any change to the quotation will be made in writing to the Client, together with an explanation as to the nature of and the reason for the change.

Page count is determined as the number of pages in the manuscript when in Standard Manuscript Format:

  • Paper size: 8.5 x 11 OR A4

  • Font: Courier OR Courier New

  • Line spacing: Double-spaced

  • Font size: 12-point

  • Margins: 1” left and right margins

  • Indent: 0.5” first-line indent on paragraphs

If, for any reason, the Client is unclear on how to format their manuscript appropriately, that formatting can be done by me.

For quotation purposes, page count is approximated from word count at 250 words per page. Once the manuscript is received and formatted, an updated quote will be provided.

Unless agreed upon in advance, the fee schedule for edits will be as follows:

  1. 1/3 (33%) of the fee will be due upon the signing of the contract by both parties and before work begins

  2. 1/3 (33%) of the fee will be due prior to the return of the editorial report and edited manuscript to the Client

  3. The remaining balance (34%) of the fee will be due upon the completion of the terms as spelled out in the contract

Unless agreed upon in advance, all other work (writing solutions, custom worldbuilding, etc.) will be invoiced in full upon the completion of the terms as spelled out in the contract.

Cancellations & Refunds

For editing services:

Prior to the signing of the contract by the Client, cancellation of services can be made at any time by the Client in writing.

Once the signed contract is returned to me, the first fee is due prior to work beginning. If the Client wishes to cancel the agreed-upon services at that time, a fee of 25% of the total quotation will be assessed.

If the Client wishes to cancel the agreed-upon services after the initial 33% fee has been paid and work has begun, no refund will be issued.

If I am forced to cancel services due to unforeseen circumstances, I will endeavor to alert the client at the earliest opportunity and a full refund will be issue.
