Editing Services

Pat yourself on the back, you're a novelist! Doesn't matter if it's a first draft or a fifteenth, all books need editing--and that's where Reforge comes in. I’m here to help turn your book into your best book.

Big Picture editing is the simplest form of editorial feedback, and looks at your novel from a 10,000-foot level, touching on all aspects of the story but focusing on the big picture.

How it works

I'll read your novel and give you tailored high-level guidance to help you improve it. This level of editing does not include chapter notes or line edits, but it will help you identify and solve structure, plot, conflict, pacing, theme, and character arc issues. This is an ideal first step for editing your story because it fixes the most crucial elements before getting into the granular stuff.

what you get

  • A detailed editorial report that explains issues I’ve identified and areas for improvement, as well as concrete suggestions to make changes and writing strategies for your revisions. The report will cover story structure and beats, plot development and pacing, character arcs and development, setting/worldbuilding, and theme, as well as writing style.

  • A 10-point story “beat sheet” identifying the ten key scenes in your story and how they function as critical beats that establish and exceed reader expectations.

  • 45 minutes of 1-on-1 time with me over video chat or phone. We can talk before the edit or after, or split up the time, it’s up to you. Additional chat time is just $25/hour in 30-minute blocks.

  • 15% off of future editorial work on this novel.

What it costs

$1.75 per page — You should expect this level of edit to take roughly 20 hours of editing work for a 100,000 word novel. Because I work on multiple books at once, I ask for 1-2 weeks to complete an edit at this level.

Chapter-level editing starts with everything in the Big Picture, then delves into the pacing, tension, and flow of chapters, sequences, scenes, and events, as well as the consistency and continuity between character voices, actions, choices, and relationships.
